What is AFM Filter Media ?

AFM Filter Media serves as a direct replacement for sand in filters, effectively doubling the performance of traditional sand filters without requiring additional infrastructure investments. Engineered from a specific type of glass, AFM undergoes meticulous processing to achieve optimal particle size and shape. Through a rigorous 3-step activation process, its surface area is increased by up to 300 times, resulting in superior mechanical and electro-static filtration capabilities.

The activated surface of AFM is self-sterilizing, effectively preventing biofouling, biocoagulation, and transient wormhole channeling of unfiltered water. This activation process also prevents bacterial mud-balling and coagulation, ensuring consistent filtration performance. Additionally, the increased surface area facilitates catalysis and adsorption reactions, similar to activated carbon but with the added benefit of easy regeneration through simple backwashing with water.

  • Expected to endure the filtration system’s lifespan
  • Offers rapid return on investment

AFM serves as a direct substitute for sand in all sand filter applications

AFM stands as a formidable defense against both biological threats like bacteria and parasites and chemical contaminants. Its unique design ensures it remains impervious to channeling, making it an effective safeguard against Cryptosporidium and Giardia infiltration. Unlike conventional filtration systems, AFM actively curtails bacterial growth and minimizes the presence of bacteria in treated water. Its superior filtration prowess translates to reduced concentrations of harmful trihalomethanes (THMs), offering a safer drinking experience. Moreover, AFM excels in extracting metals and heavy metals from water sources.

Crafted in a state-of-the-art, hygienic facility conceptualized by Dr. Howard Dryden, the CEO and mastermind behind AFM, this innovative medium incorporates metal oxide catalysts. These catalysts catalyze the separation of oxygen and water, establishing an environment rich in oxidation potential that inhibits bacterial colonization on AFM surfaces. Furthermore, its expansive activated surface area boasts a potent negative charge, facilitating the adsorption of sub-micron particles and dissolved organic molecules. Remarkably, AFM distinguishes itself by its longevity and simplicity in maintenance, as it can be effortlessly rejuvenated through a straightforward backwash process, negating the need for frequent replacements.

What attributes contribute to AFM’s remarkable effectiveness?

1. Our activation process primarily utilizes green and brown container glass due to its optimal chemical and structural characteristics.

2. The shape and size distribution of particles play a crucial role in achieving superior fluid hydraulics and solids retention. Unlike glass bead filter media, which allows solids to pass through easily, AFM’s subangular grains interlock, effectively preventing solids from slipping through.

3. Through the AFM activation process, the available surface area for adsorption increases dramatically, up to 300 times, reaching a remarkable 1,000,000 m2/m3. This vast surface area enhances the adsorption capacity for dissolved organic pollutants significantly. Combined with the magnetic attraction of its negative zeta potential, AFM emerges as the premier filtration media for potable water treatment.

What issues does biofilm pose for Pressure and RGF filters?

Silica sand is widely recognized as a reliable filtration medium, but its propensity to harbor bacteria poses challenges, particularly in rapid gravity or pressure filters. While bacteria play a vital role in biofilters and slow bed sand filters, their presence in rapid filters can lead to performance instability. Bacteria adhere to sand particles by secreting alginate jelly, forming a film that not only provides a habitat for bacterial growth but also shields them from chlorine oxidation. However, this alginate also causes sand grains to bind together, leading to bed blockages, especially in warmer months.

AFM effectively addresses this issue by preventing bacterial colonization and alginate formation. Unlike sand, AFM’s surface properties discourage bacterial attachment, ensuring consistent filtration performance. Additionally, AFM’s structure minimizes the formation of wormhole channels and prevents the aggregation of sand grains, thereby maintaining optimal filter operation over extended periods.
